KNOW YOURSELF I TIMOTHY 1:8-17
I. The Purpose of God’s Law 1:8-11
God’s law teaches you about your sin (how bad you are) and your need for a Savior; not about your righteousness (how good you are)
The law cannot make a person GOOD or ACCEPTABLE before God Gal. 2:15, 16; 21
The law can and does point out our sin and our BREAKING of God’s commandments Gal. 3:16-22; James 2:10
The law leads people to Christ and through His gospel ILLUMINATES the BEAUTY of God’s law for us
Ps. 19:7-11; Rom. 7:7-12; Gal. 3:24
II. The Power of God’s Grace 1:12-14
God’s grace transforms the undeserving and disobedient
Christ is the source of salvation and strength: this makes us THANKFUL Acts 9:15, 16; Rom. 11:6; 2 Tim. 2:1
Christ gives mercy to the ignorant and self-righteous: this makes us HUMBLE Rom. 10:3, 4; Phil. 3:3-9
Christ provides spiritual fruit to WEAK and DEPENDENT sinners: this makes us USEFUL 2 Cor. 12:9; Eph. 3:7, 8
III. The Proclamation of God’s Gospel 1:15-17
God’s gospel is trustworthy; and it’s message should be fully accepted and counted on
The OBJECTIVE act of God through His Son coming into the world Jn. 3:16; Rom. 3:21, 22
The SAVING application of God through His Son’s work of redemption Rom. 1:16; Gal. 1:13-17
The PERSONAL account to God through a sinner’s faith in His Son’s work Jn. 20:31
